A very cool project I came across recently is BirdNET-Pi, which runs on a Raspberry Pi and uses a microphone and AI to recognise bird calls. It then presents a grid heat map (see their example screenshot below) of the different bird species, giving you a fascinating insight into your local environment.

I don’t have a spare Raspberry Pi that can run it at the moment, but I am planning on ordering one soon as it’d be interesting to know how many bird types are nearby - I do hear the occasional Little Corella, Currawong, and Sulphur-crested Cockatoo in my area, as well as more common birds.
